Electric bicycles are fun to ride. However, you, obviously, want to ensure that they are safe to ride too! On this page, I am going to share a few safety tips for riding electric bicycles. Most of this is common sense, but you will be surprised at how often common sense goes out of the window for some people out there!
Decent Equipment
You are going to need some decent equipment if you are going to ride an electric bicycle. By equipment, I mean safety equipment. At the very minimum, you need a helmet. You need to protect your head if you fall off! Some people will wear padded clothing, but this is not completely necessary. If you are heading out of an evening, it is suggested that you use a hi-visibility jacket of some description. It will ensure that you are spotted amongst the glare of the car headlights.
Bicycle Lights
If you are riding of an evening, and it is likely that you will do so if you are heading to and from work, then invest in a decent pair of bicycle lights. This will ensure that you can be seen on the road! The vast majority of car and bicycle accidents are caused by the car not seeing the bicycle, so do everything in your power to ensure that you can be seen!
Using The Right Lane
If there are dedicated cycle lanes for electric bicycles, use them. There is no need for you to be veering into the path of cars if you are there. Under absolutely no circumstances should you be riding your bicycle on the sidewalk. This is dangerous for the pedestrians who are there. In most cases, this is also going to be a crime, so you will probably wish to avoid it anyway!
Obey Traffic Rules
Just because you are not in a car, it does not mean that you can disobey the rules of the road. There are so many cyclists out there who will just shoot through a red light because they do not believe that it applies to them. Guess what? It does! It is still illegal to go through a red light when you are on a bicycle. In addition to this, the light is red for a reason. If you go through that, who is to say that you will not be hit by a car? Again, many accidents on the road between cyclists and cars are caused by the cyclists own stupidity. Make sure that you do not become a statistic!
Limit Your Speed
Only cycle as fast as you can control that bike. If you are travelling at a blazing speed, then know that you have the reactions to do something at a moment’s notice. You never know when you are going to get into a pickle. If you do not believe that you can brake quickly enough at a fast speed, or quickly change direction, then you should not be cycling at that speed. Just because your electric bicycle can go that fast, it does not mean that you have to.
